What makes you happy?

There's a lot of discussions about "internalized homophobia" going on here. Talk about racism, prejudice, religion, and all that's on your mind. Now you have a new place to gab.

What makes you happy?

Everyone gets a little depressed once in a while. I'm wondering, what do you do to help pull yourself up?

I like to do little things that give me a sense of order and small accomplishment. I might organize the garage, paint a room, make a special meal, work a jigsaw puzzle, or some other little thing that makes me feel that I have been able to put things in order to some degree. Now that the weather has finally broken, I find that spending time outside tends to lift my spirits as well.

Doing something for someone else. I recently organized a food drive at work for Second Harvest Food Bank. We ended up with 28 boxes of food. When my boss and I took it to them they weighed it and it came out to a total of 552 pounds! Way more than I expected and I can not tell you how good it made me feel. Hungry people were able to eat because of it.
I am already working on the drive for next year.

Working out usually helps me since my body feels better all around. The main things that help me though are writing and music. Sometimes the right song can be all you need when you're feeling down. Writing helps since I can just forget about everything and put my emotion into what I'm writing about.

Nice weather really cheers me up. It was 75 and sunny here on Sunday. Then on the holiday Monday, it was back to 32 and snow....

But for about an hour on Sunday, I was as happy as a little girl.... :P

When I get down, I like to spend a lot of time doing constructive things like maybe making small changes around my apartment. Giving it a little bit of a different atmosphere cheers me up. Spending time with other people, and enjoying their company helps a lot too.

Today I watched a squirrel make it accross a busy highway unscathed. That made me happy.

I drink as much water as I can, then I wait around till I have to take the longest pisses. That always feels so darn good.

Soaking intimately for a very long time in a very warm, whirlpool bath with a friend. Yea...that makes me real happy.

OK got one. The lack of that awful thing known as anxiety makes me happy (or at least puts me in a much better mood).

Walking on the beach on a nice day also makes me happy. That makes two!

And I did take a nice walk on the beach today (despite it being 6 degrees out (Fahrenheit) when I got there). Put on 5 or 6 layers and walked the 3 miles to the shore. The water was transforming into ocean ice! But the sun was out in full force despite it being low in the sky this time of year (even worse for our Canadian friends).

PS, is it just me, or are there more people out there walking cats on leashes (harnesses)? I saw at least two of them today, and the felines didn't seem to mind it at all. In fact, they seemed to like it. Where I grew up, there's lots of woods and hiking trails, and I used to take walks with our cats all the time. No harness, they just followed me. Granted, I wasn't 8 miles outside downtown Boston then. I miss that. Feline withdrawal syndrome!

Hang in there J. Cats can be very smart... I think, just like humans, there are smart cats and dumb cats, brave cats and chicken cats.

When people are looking for animals to train, they often do tests on them... making loud noises etc. to see how they react. The ones that are chosen are the ones who seem curious about loud noises, not shy.

My cat would ride on my shoulders and fetch and was a great guard cat. She growled when she heard strange noises outside and would run to the window to look out. I adopted her from a friend who had found her, only a few weeks old. When I walked into her place (my friend) the 6 week old kitten no bigger than a teacup went running straight towards me and, somehow, leaped about 4 feet straight onto me into my arms. My friend said... "see, she likes you... you have to take her". So I did.

What makes me happy? Lots of things... usually figuring something out that I didn't understand before. At the moment I'd be happy if I could figure out how to be better with acrylic paints. I've decided that acrylics are the most difficult of all paint types. They dry much, much darker than when wet, they have little opacity, they lift off if you use too many brush strokes, they tend to streak very easily and it's almost impossible to get a very, very fine line.

What makes me happy? Many things.

The first sunshine after a long gray spell.
Cats.
Dogs, especially old ones.
Hearing "I love you."
Saying "I love you."
Completing a challenging task.
Weekends. Heck, sometimes the end of the day.
Flannel sheets.
Silk boxers.
The smell of Christmas trees.
Napping.
Converting a homophobe by education.
Watching penguins.
Seeing new places.
Clean socks.
New underwear.
Finding something I've given up for lost.
Cookies.

The list goes on.

-A great view from a huge window
-A nice bottle of wine with a tray of cheese, crackers and grapes
-Dim lights and a Do Not Disturb sign hanging on the outside door handle
-Chatting with a dear friend and reviewing percious moments, or better yet, planning for new ones.

So many things, but these 3 come to mind just right now:

-Barbecued Whole Spring Lamb on a Spit
-Birds at my backyard feeder
-Cuddling in a warm, huge bed with someone special
