Post Employment Depression: For Whiners Only

There's a lot of discussions about "internalized homophobia" going on here. Talk about racism, prejudice, religion, and all that's on your mind. Now you have a new place to gab.

Post Employment Depression: For Whiners Only

Postby Gaydudelaf » Sun May 10, 2009 2:47 pm

Our life has gone in a downward spiral since December. I usually hate whining and am not the depressed type, but this has gotten unbearable. This is a thread for those who are unemployed to vent. Don't hold back. Maybe we can all make sense of this if we put our heads together. Use bullet points as much as possible! My turn first.

    1. I have a PhD in Information Systems and 15 years experience in my field.
    2. In December I was laid off and not paid until January. I filed a complaint with the California department of labor and they have still not scheduled a hearing.
    3. I have put out resume's 4-5 hours every day since December and have only had 4 phone interviews and one face to face.
    4. I have lost my apartment and am living with my partner's grandparents
    5. I am out of medication but make too much on unemployment to get assistance.
    6. A clerical error (money in the wrong account) caused us to run up $800 in overdraft fees wiping out our savings and giving us a negative balance
Because of this I will not be able to pay my bankruptcy and will loose my car (I already had to skip one month so I could afford a moving truck to move out of my apartment because I couldn't afford the rent.
    7. My partner has a tooth abscess and no dentist will see him because he has no insurance and our account is overdrawn. We had to borrow the money from an elderly neighbor to get the pain meds that run out on Monday. He is going to be in agony!
    8. Every month I am out of work, my 7 years of graduate work becomes more obsolete

There I feel much better! Now it is your turn!!!!

Here are some links that may be of help:

CISJobs.com

USAJobs.gov

Government Jobs for Greener Grads: this is a jobs webpage I created for the students at the college I work at. It has some very useful information.

Yeah I read somewhere that northern California is just about the worst place to be right now. Places like Merced and Stockton are turning into ghost towns.

But they say things are starting to turn around again, so hang in there.

Damn. If I had any $ myself, I would send it to you. :(

In the short-term you are in a bit of a bind, but you do have some pretty solid tools in your job utility belt that should dovetail into some of the hundreds of thousands of federal jobs being created:

1) You are able to relocate on a moments notice
2) Your military service will score you higher on federal job applications
3) Your PhD, combined with your military experience, plus teaching background are a unique combination of skills.

Keep in mind that at your previous pay grade you have been unemployed for a relatively short period of time. I once read that it takes up to one month of searching for every ten thousand dollars of annual pay.

As opposed to many of my friends who were laid off from high paying jobs, for which they could never quite explain what their role in the company was, you have a specific set of job skills. I think that many companies are going to realize that they probably don’t need to replace those jobs in the future, but you posses skills that will again be required.

As we have discussed, the federal government is probably the place to be now days, but their hiring process is glacially slow. I have been told to expect it to take a year to get hired there. I have a friend who applied to the INS five years ago and just got hired a few months back!

Sort term; have you looked into a clinic at a dental school for Dustin? As crappy as the care is, being a veteran, you should be able to get your blood pressure pills from a VA hospital.

Canada isn't all roses and fluffy bunnies and B-day cakes...

This area has the highest unemployment rate in Canada right now. Lotsa people loosing houses, going bankrupt, down to 1-2 day weeks at work...

LOLZ..

Lidsville is the nickname I gave our neighborhood... There is a place in Port Colborne, ON, [where I grew up] that was first nicknamed Lidsville because you would literally cross a set of train tracks and there was this really run down area, it was kinda sad... it went from looking like regular average homes to a bad spot in Detroit, I remember always wondering why when I was little.

Our neighborhood has been turning into that.. so..

Anyways my home town is Leamington, ON.

Google Windsor, ON for job loss. Im about 30 mins from Windsor / Detroit.

Leamington. Ok. Got it. I googled Lidsville, On and found an old canadian t.v.show from the 70's.

I'm in Mississauga actually, but I say Toronto for ease of pronounciation.

We used to get the Detroit news on our satellite dish in B.C. I couldn't believe how much time they would spend running down all the murders and what not. And that was in the 80's.

They do have a good hockey team, though. :P

Yeah. Sad times for poor old Detroit. :?

Hey I have an update. It looks like things are starting to turn around on the east coast. I have an interview for a job in Lafayette and one in Houston. I will keep everyone posted. If you have been discouraged, I encourage you to start sending your resume's out again because things are picking up!

Good Luck!
