Labels...

Postby Guinness Fan » Mon Jan 27, 2014 6:56 pm

No, not as in personality traits......but when shopping for "stuff" - food items in particular...

How many of us actually take time to read the labels (i.e. the fine print on the back of the product) ~ instead of just picking up the can/jar/package based on brand-recognition alone?

I was amazed at how much "stuff" goes into "Shake and Bake" type chicken and pork mix...and decided I could make my own with some days-old-bread and the limited amount of spices that I've got in the cupboard above my stove...Came out great - I didn't even need the convenient little bag that comes in the shake-and-bake package...

I'm sure there are plenty of other examples....

I'm slowly becoming a label-reader. Right now I'm starting small with eliminating high fructose corn syrup.

I always read labels, I'm diabetic so I have to be careful of sugar content. Also stay away from anything hydrogenated!! And watch the sodium content too.

I'm diabetic and have a wheat/gluten sensitivity so I have become a label reader (not that I know what all those ingredients mean).

I do have a friend who is a nutritionist/food technologist and he's always ragging me about some of the things on the labels....don't eat that chicken, it has...whatever.

Fred Meyer has a good health section these days. I go there frequently for that.

The problem, as you've alluded, is that you can find something objectionable in just about anything if you look hard enough. :|

Mind you, that's not an excuse to binge upon Twinkies, but...

HEY! Hands off the twinkies! And the Ho-hos, Swiss rolls, Joe Louie's, chips and popcorn. They are all staples.

The Food and Drug Administration will soon be changing the nutrition labels.

A great improvement indeed.

I've long been mystified as to why a non-resealable package was listed as anything other than "one serving." I still don't get why a bag of potato chips, for example, doesn't come with some sort of zip top.

My favorite example, of course, was two servings in a can of soda.

Yeah, well, that is the problem, isn't it? My man and I can kill a bag of Doritos in a meal... we're not proud of this, except that at least now we don't buy the Honking Big Bag.

Doritos ~ MAN, I haven't had them in ages..........! I'll be on the hunt next time I'm at the grocery store - I think they sell them here....... I did wander into Marks & Spencer (a UK food/department store) over the weekend and bought a pack of Indian Popadoms and some spicy chutney - fantastic!
