"Foreign" Songs

Postby Guinness Fan » Tue Jun 30, 2015 4:15 pm

I've recently returned from a 8 hour road trip (and 8 hour return) by car. My local driver had downloaded some sing-along type songs to pass the time...Unfortunately, most of his customers are locals ~ hence I was subjected to several hours of Balkan musak... I did quite well with most of the English language songs/groups/singers that he had selected ~ the ones every native English speaker knows (the Beatles, Tina Turner, Johnny Cash, Elvis..)...

Which got me thinking (always a dangerous proposition)... What "foreign" language (i.e. non-English) songs do you know that "made it" (by any definition) in the U.S. market? I can think of a couple:

- Ricky Martin: Livin La Vida Loca
- Los del Rio - The Macarena
- Nina: 99 Red Baloons
- Bing Crosby - Mele Kalikimaka (the Christmas song)...raise your hand if you've ever heard that one...double points if you can sing it.
- Another Bing Crosby hit: Ave Maria (I sing a great version of it in the shower, IMHO)

I told the driver I'd give him a list of "foreign" songs that us native-English speakers can sing along to...So, recommendations for non-English sing-along songs?

I know Mele Kalikimaka very well since I grew up with that version of the Christmas album. Still have several copies of it. It with the Andrews Sisters.

From the 80s:

--99 Luftbalons by Nena available in German and English
--Rock Me Amadeus by Falco also included German lyrics in it

There must be more.

I always liked Mocedades' "¿Eres Tu?"

and love

Vicky's version of "L'amour est bleu"

Coincidentally both were entrants in Eurovision's Song Contest (in different years) and neither won.
