Top 100 Living Geniuses

Postby olywaguy » Sun Dec 07, 2008 3:35 am

The London Telegraph published its Top 100 Living Geniuses.

Its weird to see Matt Groening who is an alum at the college I work at as the 4th ranked genius in the world way past Henry Kissinger, Nelson Mandela and Stephen Hawking. That just doesn't seem right. One of the very few women included on the list is Dolly Parton!! Though I think she's talented and a very nice person, does she really belong on this list?

Osama Bin Laden and Bill Gates tied at 43!! All Bin Laden is a genius at is hide and go seek and for that he gets on the list of top 100 geniuses?

Surprisingly Oprah is not on this list.

I really question the quality of this list.

British geniuses feature heavily in a recent list that notes the greatest living thinkers of our time - proportionately more than any other country.

The top 100 living geniuses was compiled by a panel of six experts in creativity and innovation from Creators Synectics, a global consultants firm.

Boy was THAT objective... survey all Britons and more of them end up on the list..... ....

Congrats on your Simpsons creator friend. It seems that this is more of a popularity vote like Britain's Got Talent...

It seems like they took a very loose definition of genius when looking at this list. Honestly many of the people on it are talented, but I wouldn't use the term genius to describe many of those individuals.

I've never heard of most of them. Of the ones I know, I think some have had moments of genius, but that's a different thing altogether.

Way too many musicians on that list. Dolly Parton? Gimme a break.

She has two prominent assets, but I would give her music a D-.

Most geniuses are chemists and medical pros that never get proper recognition.

Geez, I knew a guy I met from a phone line, who was reknowned for his "genius" in oral stimulation techniques. Why not add him to the list?

In her defense, Dolly did have a moment of genius in the '70s. Elvis Presley wanted to record a cover of one of the songs she wrote, "I Will Always Love You." But Elvis' policy at the time was to force songwriters to give him 50% of their royalty rights to the songs. Dolly refused.

Twenty-or-so years later, Whitney Houston sang an arrangement of "I Will Always Love You" for the movie "The Bodyguard." The single sold 12 million copies, topped the charts for three months, and made Dolly Parton an obscenely rich woman.

I've never found any lists like this to be remotely persuasive, but since it was here, I clicked. The first name that my eyes rested on was Ken Russell; that was the end for me. I thought the awfulness of his talent was established by now!

Are there really so many geniuses? It's like the scene from Manhattan. "You know a lot of geniuses, you know. You should meet some stupid people once in a while, you know, you could learn something."

They have some updating to do, since Albert Hoffman and Bobby Fischer are both dead now. I have no argument with Tim Berners-Lee in the #1 slot, though.

Yes, there's a big difference between talented and genius. Most on that list are just the former, which is nothing to sneeze at, but not geniuses.

A very good point that. Mostly I'm stunned at the oversight of Ed Witten not being on the list.

I don't know that I'd classify Kevin Smith as a genius, but I understand his stuff. And he's cuter than all get out. :D

I agree with you Ben, I have recently got into his movies and love how he portrays the every day person especially males and of course there are some hints of homoeroticism in his movies.

I also have to mention that my partner looks like a tall version of Kevin Smith. But with a goatee rather than a beard.

Who would you nominate as a genius...anyone in the world.

1. Bill Gates
2. Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak,
3. The majority of the more recent Nobel Prize winners

That's a start.
