Professional Boxer Come Out as Gay

Postby olywaguy » Fri Oct 05, 2012 9:16 am

Orlando Cruz, professional boxer, ranked 4th in the world in the featherweight category, comes out as gay.

In a statement given to the Boxing Scene website Cruz said: "I've been fighting for more than 24 years and as I continue my ascendant career, I want to be true to myself. I want to try to be the best role model I can be for kids who might look into boxing as a sport and a professional career. I have and will always be a proud Puerto Rican. I have always been and always will be a proud gay man."

Everybody is touting him as the first gay boxer...I disagree with that statement. There have probably been tons of gay boxers. He is just the first one to come out at the peak of his career. If he wins his next match, he will become the number one boxer in the world in his category.

Quite an inspiration during October which is LGBT History Month and National Coming Out Day (October 11)

Now kids will find someone like them in the boxing world.
