Bowl Games

Postby olywaguy » Fri Dec 31, 2010 5:27 pm

Can someone please explain the bowl games system to me.

Why are two teams (Miami and Notre Dame) with a 7-5 record playing in the Sun Bowl? That's not a very good record at all.

Why is Georgia (6-6) playing Central Florida (10-3) in the Liberty Bowl?

I thought only the best teams got the opportunity to go to a bowl game. These can't be the best teams of the year!!

Is it setup in such a way so that everyone gets an opportunity to play a bowl game even if they had a bad record? Like little league, where every kid gets a trophy no matter what.

You just about got it. The reason that a 7-5 team can make it to a big bowl game is simply because there are so many bowl games to play. It's more about money than anything else.

There's a good explanation of this on wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl_game
In the Beginning there was nothing, and God said: 'Let there be Light." There was still nothing, but you could see it.

There are 35 bowl games, meaning 70 teams get to go. Any team with a record of 6-6 (with at least five of the six wins coming against Football Bowl Subdivision teams) is eligible. This year, there were 72 of 120 teams eligible to play in bowl games. Western Michigan and Temple, 6-6 and 8-4 respectively, were left out of the bowls this year.

The bowl system sucks. I want a playoff.

Aw that's cute. They build self esteem by creating 35 winners. Come to think of it, I kinda wondered why there were so many "championship" games. I just never bothered following up my microscopic curiosity. :P

Nebraska is very depressed right now. A dark cloud hangs over the whole state.

And now they're moving to a conference that's really, really bad at winning bowl games. It appears they may be the only Big 10(+2) team that plays defense now, though.

Sorry about that. Now they know how Washington felt a few weeks ago. Some of my Nebraska colleagues were just a little bit too smug at the time. Payback's a bitch

I can't believe that Mississippi State beat Michigan. I bet the state of Mississippi is having a big celebration today.

Pretty much everyone who follows college football saw that coming. MS State has a great coach now with Dan Mullen, and Michigan's defense is ridiculously bad. The fact that MS State held them to 14 points suggests that the Big Ten(+2) plays worse defense across the board than anyone imagined, as Michigan scored a good number of points in lots of their conference games.

Seattle Seahawks beat the Rams 16-6.

The big news? Seahawks becomes the first team ever to win its division with a losing record of 9 - 7.

Now they will battle the New Orleans Saints next weekend.

How is this possible?

Because 9-7 is a winning record? Technically?

Don't worry. It's a Seahawks we're talking about here. I anticipate a first-round "out" to restore cosmic balance.
