Tragic Death of a an out Gay Hockey Guy

Postby buccoman » Sat Feb 06, 2010 9:20 am

Really sad to hear of Brendan Burke's death in an auto accident yesterday. Brendan is a guy who played hockey all of his life, and happenend to be the gay son of Toronto Maple Leafs' GM Brian Burke, who accepted his son openly and proudly. Brendan was in the midst of establishing himself as a college hockey coach and potential future hockey executive. This is a guy who could've made a real difference for a lot of closeted athletes. Here's a link to his story:

RIP, Brendan.

Wow. What an incredible story, and what an incredible loss. I had no idea.

:-(

I didn't know Brendan personally, but I have friends who did. He'll be missed by a lot of people.

Here's an interview Brendan did about coming out to his dad and his team.

He was a student manager of the hockey team at my alma mater.

Nobody is saying it publicly, but I think Rick Rypien was gay. He played for the Vancouver Canucks. He killed himself last Monday.

His cousin is Mark Rypien, the only Canadian born player to win a Super Bowl in the NFL. Mark was born in Calgary but grew up in Spokane, Washington.

Very athletic family. I think Rick's dad is a boxer, and his brother was also a hockey player.

Very sad. :(

Yeah, I heard the rumors too. So sad. I pray for the day when a person's sexuality doesn't even matter. And I BET there are many, many gay professional athletes right now. I wish everyone of them would come out. I know many gay people believe that their sexuality is a private matter and none of anyone's business, but if more came out, it would be much less of an issue for everyone. I am out to those that matter right now (even think my children know), but in the near future, I will be totally out.
