Whether it's talk about the court, the turf, the field, or the guys running around on any of these, this is the place to talk sports.

So I posted on this Sports Board the other day.

I used the same avatar/pic of myself that I use here.

I was just making some points about an upcoming NFL game. The Board is mostly guys but there are some women who know their sports too and post.

Many posters use some hot chick pic for their avatar. Some use something funny or animated gifs and some use their own pic like I did.

So I posted and said, "Blah, blah, blah. . . ." (Nothing significant.)

A poster with a good-looking, woman avatar picture replied with:

"I like the way you think partner. Sometimes it is too late but sometimes its not!!!! BTW - you are a very attractive man."

That was a surprising response! I was flattered, not really sure whether it was a man or a woman. And not knowing how or whether to respond.

I didn't respond right away, but soon a third poster said:

"Chance (the other poster's nickname), I sure hope you are a chick! A chick with a hot chick in her avatar... nice."

So, Chance (the poster who complimented me) responds with:

"I was just messin with the guy cuz he looks like a homo in that pic."

Ha! That took me back a bit!

I flippantly replied with a good sense of humor:

"How'd you know?! You can tell just from the picture? What gives me away?"

So what do you guys think? What's your interpretation of his posts and am I really a dead giveaway?!

What is it? The hair? The soft features? The shapely legs? The pose? Just the right lighting?

It's your wang hanging out the leg of your shorts along with that pronounced Adam's Apple. :P  Just messing with you.

Really, I think it's a bunch of insecure idiots acting out because they can't admit that they are either homosexual or bisexual.

Another possibility is that a lot of hetero guys often feel intimidated when a gay man is not only interested in, but has in depth knowledge of sports, cars, and anything not fashion related.

As for the person that made the first comment...probably a dude that was trolling and got caught. Since you are obviously comfortable with your sexuality, you are definately more manly than he could ever hope to be.

On a sports board homophobia is the norm and often it is just "trash talk". You could have trash talked back and they wouldn't have pursued it any further, but you took them seriously and exposed yourself to more barbs by responding and confirming what they may not have really meant.

But based upon the photo alone:

You are an adult male with a slender boyish body *
You have no facial hair
Your wrist are crossed, instead of open body language that conveys confidence.
You are wearing bright red
Your legs are long but the shorts appear short enough to see almost all the way up your thigh

* (usually the first thing that raises suspiscions and makes people look for other indicators.)

None of the other indicators mean much by themselves but in COMBINATION they can add up like compounded interest if there isn't enough to offset them.

The photo as is seems more appropriate for a dating website, editorial photography for an article, or model portfolio, but would not necessarily be an ideal choice for a Sports talk site. These things are so subjective that you could literally keep everything the same, but show an action pose of you climbing or hiking with your gear and suddenly you're an Action Adventurer Alpha Stud!

My suggestion, again, would be to start trash talkin' them back. Make up a list of 101 disses just to warm your brain up. Not vicious ones, but more ridiculous exaggerations like Yo Momma jokes, except it's directed at the person instead of their Momma.

Also work on one liners so you can use whatever they say right back at them, like a comedian dealing with hecklers, examples:

"Well you look like a hot chick, in YOUR pic, and we don't know if THAT'S true".

"If you're really one of those fat ugly chicks with their own zipcode, EVERY guy on the board will turn homo when they see you on live cam!"

"And if you're an ugly dude, every homo on this board will turn straight."

"But no matter what you are, you KNOW that you want a piece of this!"

Use your own style of course, but sometimes the best defense, is amping up the OFFENSE !

If you are going to do a new pic for the sports site some suggestions would be:

Torso up headshot of you in a team jersey, flying the colors of your favorite team, with 5 o'clock shadow and bedhead(or baseball cap, or visor). Experiment with a variety of facial expressions. Do some basic shots as well as "reaction shots" as in cheering and pumping your fist and other gestures that you do when you are excited about a game.

What sells Sports Illustrated(other than the swimuit edition), is the action shots that capture a slice of life, freezing it in time. Sports fans are programmed to respond to that, so you could use the same "marketing" to your advantage in your choice of photos.

That is a beautiful avatar. You're very handsome, and the mountains in the background are impressive too.

It's a good picture. You're a handsome guy in a great shot. Don't let the stupid "homo" comments bother you. Guys often say that when their masculinity is threatened.

Excuse me, but I am little bit confused. Is Catapult gay or straight? If gay, what is the problem? Just means a straight guy has pretty good gaydar.

Folks need to know that liking sports is not the sole realm of straight people. Gay people like sports too. Of course, it is up to you, Catapult, to decide if you want to come out to these folks or not.

As for someone making a comment on how attractive you are (whether the comment comes from a male or female) just say thank you for the compliment. It really boosts someone's confidence to hear that and the fact that Catapult had more than one person say that would really make my day.

No there is no problem. I was just surprised that I looked like a homo to him and wondered what it was that "gave me away!"

You're right, he either just has good gaydar, got lucky with a wise crack, or got caught trolling as devilnuts suggested.

Or as dracuscalico pointed out, maybe it was the crossed wrists and the fact that I appear to be modeling for GQ or JCrew in the photo and so these roughnecks and Budweiser types felt I looked a little too cute for such a sports board.

Very few of them have their pictures up there. But why have an avatar if they are all just pictures of hot chicks? I mean would it add anything to our board if we all changed our avatars to pics of hot guys? Hmmm?

I hadn't noticed that you can see way up my leg. But YOU did! The avatar itself doesn't reveal so much thigh! That larger picture was just an added bonus for this group.

Anyway, no big deal. I had fun with it and I think they did too. Thanks for the observations. I'll go check to see if there is any more trash talking over there.

Earl, those are the central Cascades of Washington State in the background. I was at base camp on a climb of Mt. Shuksan. I lived in Seattle for a number of years but since moved and have been bouncing around NC and Holland.

No more trash talk from the sportsguys.

To the 3rd poster who said about my pic:

"its kinda gay..i'll put you at metrosexual."

I playfully responded with:

"Ha! Metrosexual! Not me. I'm not really a neatnic or into fashion or GQ. Why don't y'all post your real pictures so we can all comment, not these hot chicks that are in your dreams only!"

He then responded by saying:

"i was joking, ..you are a stud...you look like michael phelps...anywayz...enough of that nonsense."

I think we made some progress with these guys! But I still don't think they think I'm really gay. I think I disarmed them and threw them off by "admitting" I was and that they had found me out.

Beautiful picture! I think the guy typed what he thought and is now trying to backtrack and make something up. If you have to have a woman in your avatar to 'prove' that you are not gay, then I think you might be protesting too much!

Catapult, do you still come to WA State? There is going to be a Butch Board meet in Seattle in late Jan. (23 - 25).

Jealousy! Jealousy! Jealousy!! There is nothing about your photo that say "homo". I find whenever any inscure, supposedly "hetro" men get jealous, the easiest thing for them to do is scream homo. It's their way of marking territory. Kinda like what a male dog does. Just 'cause a dog pees on a bush it doen't mean it his!

olywaguy,

I haven't been back to Seattle for a while now. No family or close friends there now.

But I may return some day. Love the NW.

Daknee,

Yeah, I think it has become fashionable for guys to call other guys gay or homo, for whatever reason.

Sometimes it just playful and not mean-spirited and may actually represent some progress that guys will use the term lightly and in jest like it's no big deal and maybe this represents an acceptance of the natural existence of gays.

But some gays may feel that the underlying intent is always or mostly derogatory.

There's probably a little of both going around.

Catapult, I believe it was Elenore Roosevelt who said, and I paraphrase. " "We, ourselves are the only ones who can let others words harm us." I have always liked this quote because, the longer I live the more I find it to be true. We really can not control what other think or feel. We can only control what we, ourselves think or feel. You know kinda like the sticks and stone thing.

And finally this in from the original poster.

"go to myspace and email me some more pics of you. I have a website i wanna put them on, lol. Im just kidding dude. Your responses are hilarious and I appreciate your good sense of humor. With that said, Are you seeing anyone right now?"

He's back to trolling again. Never expected to get hit on in that sports forum. :)

Wow! Again...it was all just bluster... But I hope you know better than to give pics to a stranger...you don't want to end up as the cover page for a pornsite, "Climb Every Mountain", "Cocky in the Rockies", "Camp Buddies", etc........

But to answer his/her question about whether you are seeing somebody:
