It's not my boss. It's a combo of J.D. Power and Associates surveys saying we're not empathetic enough, and this crazy manager in my building who came up with the entire program that everyone in the front lines customer service in the company has to go along with.

My general rule is that I'll kind of take my cues from you as to whether or not I offer "emotional connections." If you want to B.S. about the weather, the lottery, etc., I'm cool with it. If you ask me how I am, I'll ask you how you are back.

But, if you're like 2/3 of agents, and kick off your call with "himynameisblackmetI'mcallingwithcoloradoinsuranceandmyagentcodeis________callingonpolicy#_______andIdon'tunderstandthebillingonitatall"...well, I'm not going to get into it with you, since you're clearly not that interested. Except now I have to, so I end up having to shove in "how are you today's?" and "I'll be happy to help you with that's" at awkward moments. Which makes you think I'm even more of a dolt that you already take me for.

Ugh. People.
We can sit for a while and talk about
The things that bring you down
Like heaven and martini's
And boys that hang around
If if told you my biggest secret
Would you promise me you'd stay?
It isn't what you're thinking
It's simple in a way

Here's one I like: taxonomy.

Not mephitis mephitis or ratus ratus, but a word that describes the creation of auto-generated heirachial categories within a thingy.

Everything at my job right now is about making an "emotional connection" with whoever's calling in. Apparently we're not squishy-warm-touchy-feely-enough, especially at my site.

So, now I have to actually pretend to care about our callers emotional well-beings and not "interact on a purely transactional basis." And do it 30 seconds faster on average than I did last year.

"please allow 6-8 weeks" = we're hoping you'll forget to send in/give up that 20$ mail-in rebate so we won't have to pay you

"operational requirements" = we're not hiring more people, and can't afford to call in overtime

"system access fee" = (for Canucks only) we're charging more, just because we can

"whatever" (when used as a sentence) = I'm too passive-aggressive to just say "f-you"

"calls will be taken in the order received" = we thought you might assume that calls are taken in random order

"no purchase necessary" = we say that because our lawyers told us to, doesn't really mean much

"stakeholders" = we're not quite sure who we're referring to, so we thought we could woo you with a fancy word

I hate anything that has the word "Fee" in it as in Overdraft Fee, Account Closure Fee, Supply Fee, etc. Just means a big company extorts all your hard earned money legally.

Was "Oh... my God" or any of the other stereotypical "valley girl" lingo mentioned already?

That and the universal "Well we do apologize for that", usually by Bank of America or other huge corporations that screw something up, charge you a nasty fee for it, then refuse to correct it?

"Hurry up!" I can't stand hearing that. My very impatient friend says that to me practically every day.

1. System Access Fee (yeah, right... we all know there is no such thing, but you charge it anyway)

2. Will arrive in 6-8 weeks (sure, I believe you)

3. Your call is important to us, please hold (if you don't get disconnected first)

Accountable. It seems this word is used more frequently than ever in the workplace, and especially by bosses who want to hold everyone "accountable" except themselves.

Family Member Pricing. I see this one all the time. Kinda loses all meaning when it's a monthly deal.

-VANOC

ok, technically not a word but an acronym ("Vancouver Olympic Comittee"). VANOC has been elevated to the status of semi-sovereign entity, immune from the laws the Land, that has been making the local citizenry's life a nightmare and will gleefully, come April, give these same people the bill for their little "party".
