Auto Insurance

Postby Bramasole_iowa » Tue Sep 16, 2008 10:22 pm

What do you drive and what do you pay?

I drive a 2001 Buick Century Limited.
In moving from Iowa to Oregon my insurance went from $285 to $540.
85% premium increase for moving to USSoRegon.

1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue

$530 for 6 months thru Safeco (I get the employee discount), with state minimum liability/uninsured motorist/towing/loss of use/$1000 deductibles.

I didn't get my license until I was 20 1/2, so I get rated like I'm about 22 from all insurance companies. Plus, I have a speeding ticket. So, basically, I pay out my ass for a dumpy car no matter what.

Oregon is more expensive than Iowa for insurance in general. And, yes, your address DOES matter.

99 Jeep Cherokee Illinois raised the sales tax to 11% and I got mad at them and registered in Wisconsin. Insurance in Illinois was going to be be about a $1000 a year and in Wisconsin I'm paying $540 from Geico.

I have a 1995 GMC van that used to belong to my grandpa. It wasn't going to pass the emissions tests that are required in the cities, so I registered it in the country. Insurance is $530 a year.

I've never had to file a claim on any car I've had. The only accident I've been in was when I was rear-ended by a police patrol car. That was a good day.

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup...$500 for 6 months-- minimum liability only with a clean driving record. I live in the state that has the highest insurance requirements. Mandatory auto insurance laws are a scam intended to pad the profits of the insurance industry.

blackmet, I didn't start driving until I was 25. I still tell them I got my first license at 16.

'94 Honda Accord, paying for just the bare minimum required for liabilities, except I raised my $5,000 minimum required by the state to $50,000. That was about $210/year. For options, I got collision and comp. with a $300 deductible for about $130/year total and 30 days of rental coverage up to $30/day (the car has over 200,000 miles on it and is worth maybe $1,800 because it runs well and is technically in "good" condition). The rental coverage ran me about $80/year.
Paying $40/month, roughly $480/year. The premium is $420/year, but paying monthly brings it up a few dollars. It's relatively cheap to insure a car in the county I live in, and since I haven't had any incidents in over 3 years (haven't even had a car for almost 2 of those years), the state forgave my past incidents (3 consecutive years is needed for the "clean slate" thing to kick in). I guess I'm getting my money's worth since I only drive it to work and back mostly. I'll probably qualify for the "under 10,000 mile" discount which will save me an additional 10% after driving it for a year and putting less than 10,000 miles on it. The insurance company noted my miles in November, and 5 months later, I've only driven about 1,900 miles (not because of the 10% discount, but because I can't afford to). Quite a change from 10 years ago when I was putting 30-40K miles on annually.
