What's A Nice Guy Like You Doing In A Place Like This?

Postby Guinness Fan » Sat Feb 12, 2011 12:15 am

Not asking about how you found the SA site, but how you ended up where you're currently living...Native, transplant like me, or just passing through?

Me ~ I landed in Washington, DC, 4 years ago ~ the job brought me here...

Still live at home with my Dad. Going to hopefully move down to London for a year in 2012 to do a MSc then jump across to either Toronto or Florida to do a PhD. One can dream eh?!

Well, if you mean why my family moved to the United States, it was due to my younger sister who has cerebral palsy and needed rehab. Tupelo, MS has a rehab center that could help her.

Why am I in Olympia, Washington? Moved here for the job that I have now. Been living here now for 12 years.

Transplant, like many people here in the Pacific Northwest. Came out here 22 years ago to visit some former clients after my office in Minnesota closed and just to see somewhere outside the Midwest. Visit v in June when the weather was lovely and sunny. They said it was always like this in the summer and great most of the year. (They fibbed just a little  ). Figured I could look for a job here as well as anywhere else so I packed up my Honda and moved here. No job, no place to live, not really knowing anyone. Don't know if I'd have the guts (or naivete) to do that now. And to be truthful? Also to kinda come out somewhere on my own away from where I'd lived my entire life. Haven't regretted it at all. Now it's home.

Born in Seattle, raised in the 'burbs north of same, now living slightly closer to Vancouver than Seattle by the Google Ruler.

Retired from the Navy after 21 years, most of which was spent in the tropics. Small town, great economic opportunities, terrific university and very cheap real estate. Not to mention the terrific weather! What's not to like about Florida?

My mom decided to move to the US from Manila, and since we already had extended family in the Bay Area, we ended up here.

I don't know how to do the "Carlos wrote" thing... So I will quote - "Tons and tons of hurricanes...been there, done that!! No more!!"

True, however, unlike earthquakes/tornadoes/tidal waves and the like, we have days to prepare. Slap on the shutters, turn on the security system, and book to the sister's in Alabama or Mississippi. Then come back when the storm has passed. No problem :D

Just click the quote button at the top right corner of the post you want to quote. Easy Peasy.

All true, but floods are extremely messy while earthquakes are hit and run. Doesn't take too long to pick up after an earthquake.

Thank you Nimby I am half-blind and never noticed the "quote" button.

I've lived here for 30 years now and been through some 5 or 6 hurricanes including Ivan which was considerably stronger than Katrina. Clean-up has taken the better part of a day at best to round up the tree limbs and things that clutter the yard. But, now that I've eliminated all the Live Oaks on my property, that shouldn't be a problem. And with a whole-house generator with auto-shift load switch, hurricanes really aren't a problem. I suppose it is somewhat like our Canadian friends dealing with snow, ice and cold weather, it is all in what you're used to.

Wherever it is, home is certainly where the heart resides :D

MARRY ME!!!!

I've been through too many hurricanes in Louisiana and Texas to list here - Ivan did a real number on my hunting lease in South Central Alabama. Still prefer hurricanes over earthquakes, though.....

My parents moved up here and I've been stuck here ever since.... a change of scenery would be nice.
