Cravings?...

Postby Guinness Fan » Mon Feb 10, 2014 3:28 pm

No, not those kind of cravings   This is the Travel, Food & Leisure section.
I had a meeting today with several Americans living here in Holland & the subject of "what kinda food do you miss & can't get here" came up... By an overwhelming majority (all 4 of us); Southern fried chicken and any type of Mexican food.......Makes my mouth water just thinking of it. Time for a trip back to the States.

No Mexican food in the Netherlands? Are there any Hispanics in the Netherlands?

I too get cravings, but they're seldom complicated. Last night I wanted a root beer float, but was apparently unwilling to go to the grocery store at 9:15 PM to get the necessary supplies.

Even Canada has lousy Mexican restaurants. They can't even make a good taco without getting it all greasy.

I can understand why Mexicans don't want to live here though what with this freezing winter we're having.

The Mexican food I've seen here is all faux Mexican - if you can even call it that....Never before have I had kernal corn in a taco or burrito. Don't ask me about the "refried beans"....... So, for all you entrepreneurs of Mexican cuisine out there, the Netherlands, and the rest of Europe, awaits....

Geez the only Taco Bell within 10 miles of me just closed down forever today, adding insult to injury.

They need high traffic at those fast food places or they go belly up. I guess the diarrhea tacos scared too many people away.

I love Taco Bell, but the after-effects were... unpleasant. I don't eat it anymore. :(

FLASH! Monday, February 17th...Amsterdam...Traveled one hour out of my way to eat at an "authentic" Mexican resturant (as recommended by my Dutch colleagues)...Walked in & the place looked legit...sombereros on the wall, tequila on the menu...ordered the 3 taco special and lo & behold....kernal corn in the tacos  I engaged the waitress in conversation & found out she was from Spain - now living in the Netherlands to learn English (!?)...and that the "chef" was from Egypt.... My search continues......Taco Bell is looking better & better every day - in spite of the consequences.

Our authentic taco restaurant is run by Koreans, and they hardly speak English never mind Spanish.

I feel your pain, Nimby... I forget how far-spread they are, but we have "Papa Murphy's" take-n-bake pizza here. I have to wonder what the Irish know about making pizza. If our local is any indicator, not much.

Had chicken curry for lunch.....I'd have thought the Dutch would know what curry is given their ties to the Dutch East Indies/Indonesia... Talk about bland ~ had to spice it up with loads of black pepper... I think I'll head out to find a decent curry house this week and order a chicken vindaloo to make up for it.

I'm heading back to the US on holiday tomorrow...Besides Southern fried chicken (which I know I can't find in Boston), I've got my eyes/stomach set on (1) a lobster roll - light on the mayo, heavy on the lobster, (2) a basket of fried clams and (3) scrambled eggs, 3 strips of bacon, English muffins & free refills of coffee .........YUMMMMMMMMM....the simple things in life.... :D

I could do with a good fudge brownie lying beneath a scoop of French vanilla ice cream, drizzled with caramel sauce and sprinkled with crushed peanuts about now...

When it's so cold out, I like a good bowl of borscht. Mmmmm

I have had borscht once in my life. At Weezie's Borscht Hut in Castlegar, BC.

And yes, it was awesome.

I think that was part of the meal combo. The hand-held meat pie?

Oh, sounds tasty. Beats the chicken nuggets and fries currently maturing in the oven, though I've found mixing some mae ploy into my Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce gives a pleasant kick.

Living in the Balkans for the past 6 months, I'm off to a quick UK/Irish getaway...and I'm craving:
(1) An English language newspaper - they kind you buy at the shop - real paper, real ink...the kind you can fold & crumple...Not something you read on-line.
(2) A visit to a bookstore that sells English language books. I never got into this Amazon.com-thing... I can spend an entire day in a bookstore thumbing through books...and walking out with an armload full. Never got into the e-reader thingy.
(3) A full-English/full-Irish breakfast...scrambled eggs, bacon, fried tomatos...endless cups of tea.
(4) A quiet pub that doesn't blare Eastern European musak...Elvis Presley sang in ENGLISH...thank you very much
(5) A pilgrimage to Marks & Spencer to (think J.C. Penny/Target) to buy of all things, socks... The shite they sell here must be ex-Soviet stock
(6) Some spicy food...not that I'll find it in the UK/Ireland...but black pepper is about as spiced-up as it gets here in the Balkans.

I could really tuck into a pizza from Geno's in Astoria, OR.

Alas, it would definitely be cold by the time it got here.
