All videos need to be in mpeg4 format, the 20 buck version of QT player will allow you to import ANY (inc divx) windows playable file into QT. There are free converters out there that will do it....but like you say most of them are junk....

hopefully, someone has a good free one.

btw, here is a free prog to rip dvd's to ipod:

None of the above. It's a cool toy, but you pay out the @$$ to join the cult. Playing movies is a novelty, but it's hard on such a small screen (I have 20/20 vision and I still have a hard time seeing it.) The hardware and software interface are probably the best features. They do the job better than anything else out there I've seen.

Worth it to buy? It depends on how much of a gear/label whore you are.

I don't need the novelty of video on a tiny screen. I have a second generation iPod that does what the iPod was originally made to do: Play music well with an easy to use interface.

The iPod video/nano line also does not appeal to me because Apple pulled the FireWire interface from them. What the hell?! They left those of us with older G3 iMacs that only have usb 1.1 and firewire in the dust! You don't need a supercomputer to upload music to an iPod at high speed.

Then again, I am still using an old Quadra 605 for everyday tasks. 8)

I have an older one as well the mini. I wouldn't watch vids.

Yeah apple fucked up by removing firewire off the new ones...i guess usb2.0 won out.
