Don't Need No 140 Characters...

So, it was only a matter of time before someone did this kind of analysis. The attached link takes you to a map that resulted from a study of hate speech on Twitter that analyzed specific words and "hate speech" focusing specifically on sexual orientation, enthicity and the physically challenged. At first glance when the map opens it would appear that pretty much most places east of the Rockies is a hotbed where it's a free-for all of negative tweets aimed at those groups, but it's interesting when you enarge the map a bit to find that there are zones and areas where it might be more prevalent. Interestingly enough, most of the areas are outside major population centers (where people are "forced" into proximity and living together).

It's pretty obvious (and no surprise to any of us, I'm sure) that it's much more "acceptable" to use derogatory speech aimed directly at gay men (although it would appear attitudes toward lesbians is less used).

For our Canadians, sorry but this analysis apparently only includes the contiguous "lower 48" of the U.S. Still, there's a similar Twitter study by the University of Alberta which was set up to specifically track use of "casual" homophobic speech (that term is a little troubling but illustrative nonetheless) in more or less real time. And that site shows the acutal posts with the user's Twitter handles, etc. http://www.nohomophobes.com/#!/today/

Wow. Canadian Twitterers are so gay.

Honestly, I've never tweeted and don't plan on it. I'm trying to disconnect from all this social media BS. It's so... stupid.

The biggest haters seem to be bible punchers and then they always back it up with chapters and verses.

Not a big twitter fan either. I guess if you're part of a group it's useful but man I find it almost totally useless.

Though the Geography of Hate is interesting, I found the Canadian version to be very effective. When you can see the posts, you learn so much from it.
