Time's Person of the Year

Postby olywaguy » Wed Dec 15, 2010 4:12 pm

Time's 2010 Person of the Year is Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook:

For connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them; for creating a new system of exchanging information; and for changing how we all live our lives, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is TIME's 2010 Person of the Year.

He's only 26. Not sure if he deserves Person of the Year. No doublt his contribution to society has been incredible, and he has united and in some case reunited the world. He has created a phenomenon....well, maybe he does deserve the recognition....I don't know.

I don't think he does. Facebook is such a colossal waste of time. If anything, with all this screen to screen communication with someone someone you don't know half a world away, it destroys local, face to face communication with your neighbours. All it really does is track your movement on the net and makes you a target for marketers. No thank you. I've defriended almost everyone except my closest friends, but I see them in person anyway, so I don't even get on facebook anymore. Besides I have better things to do than baby sit your farm animals. :D

Not at all. I met some great people here that have become personal friends, and one very special guy who's probably altered my life more than he realizes.

The internet in general is a gigantic waste of time. And thank God for that! :P

I've had some fun on Facebook. Not my favorite website, but it's in the top ten somewhere. YouTube is my #1.

Regardless of whether Facebook is a waste of time, the fact that Zuckerberg's "baby" now has half a BILLION active users deserves recognition. At least that's what I think.

If I remember correctly, the "Person of the Year" designation is for those people who have done the most to shape society, for good or for ill, in the past year.
